Free Area
Free area, measured in square feet or square meters, refers to the unobstructed space in which air can freely flow through. Free area is important to consider because of it’s direct relationship with pressure drop. Higher free areas have lower pressure drop due to the lack of resistance in air flow. Tamco has a unique overlapping blade construction so dampers can be made to size without blanking off free area. Our free area charts provide free area for each installation method (flanged to duct, installed in duct, etc) based on damper size and series.
